Biography

Shirley Ann is an artist currently living in Renfrew, Ontario, with her husband and two children. Throughout her life, she has lived in several provinces in Canada and has a deep appreciation for the beauty of this country. As a young child, Shirley Ann would spend hours drawing, always preferring animals, and making their personalities come to life on paper or canvas. She started studying coloured pencil techniques, and worked with that medium for 20 years. More recently, she has branched into acrylic paints due to the strength of their colours and textures she can achieve.
Shirley Ann considers her art education as self-directed. She has taken numerous courses over the years including at Unversity of Calgary, Northmount Arts Centre, and many different workshops to improve her techniques and create her own style. She considers her work a mix of realism with some impressionism mixed in.

Shirley Ann also is an avid photographer. She spends many hours photographing subjects of interest and has developed a large amount reference material for use in her paintings. She has found that her photography is part of the creative process in developing her paintings allowing her to have full control of her artwork.
At the age of 13, Shirley Ann won first place in an Ontario Heritage Art contest with a drawing of two horses pulling a wagon. She has had her work appear in the Colored Pencil magazine, and in November 2009 she was profiled on CTV Ottawa’s program Regional Contact for her coloured pencil portraits and horse show photography.
